How to throw an epic 30th Birthday Party in Chicago

Turning 30 deserves a party that feels like you — not a back room with sad lighting and a “reserved” sign on the table.

If you want your 30th birthday to feel elevated, fun, and still totally flexible (read: you can do it your way and keep the budget in check), Le Loft is built for it: 4,800 square feet, two distinct vibes under one roof, and an open-vendor setup so you’re not boxed into a package you don’t even want. (Le Loft)

The 30th birthday formula that works here: “Dinner + Dance + a moment”

Le Loft’s layout makes it easy to create a party that moves without feeling chaotic:

  • Start with cocktails + photos on the brighter East Side (golden hour hits different with those factory windows). There’s no need to bring a backdrop, cause our color-blocked walls offer great built-in photo-ops. But, if you want to do something extra, try a custom balloon backdrop by
  • Do a seated dinner (or “fancy grazing”) with the setup that fits your guest count — from a 30-person intimate dinner to a full-on 70+person bash.
  • End with dancing + a signature moment in the Blue Disco Room (this is where you put the disco ball to work).

Built-in amenities that save you money (and stress)

A big reason 30th birthdays feel “expensive” is hidden rentals. At Le Loft, a bunch of the vibe is already baked in:

  • Sonos sound system + projector setup (hello, photo montage or “30 things we love about you”). (Le Loft)
  • Two kitchenettes for catering and dessert staging. (Le Loft)
  • Blue Disco Room for dancing, a lounge, or a “quiet break” space. (Le Loft)
  • Wicker Park location that’s easy for guests to get to (and easy to keep the night going after). (Le Loft)

Decor that looks luxe without going overboard

The space already photographs beautifully (exposed brick + hardwood + color-blocked walls), so you don’t need to wallpaper the place in decor to make it feel special.

If you’re looking to elevate the space even more, we also provide colored up lights to really bring a vibe.

You can also add your own touch to the walls with customized decor. Here are a few special items we’re obsessing over lately:

  1. Tinsel Banners

Tinsel is having a moment, and we’re here for it. These banners are a price-friendly way to make a statement.

2. Signature Invites

Go luxe with your invite without dropping too much on OG mail. Plus, e-vites like this one from Paperless Post are climate-friendly.

3. Pack a Punch with big, shiny balls.

Ummm, yes, please. These big shiny balls are over the top in the best way, and we’re all for it. They come in a wide variety of colors, too.

Easy 30th themes that look high-end fast

Pick one clear direction and repeat it across 3–4 touchpoints (bar sign, cake, one statement install, and a table detail):

  • Dirty Thirty” but make it chic (olives + martinis + cheese boards) Check out our dirty thirty inspo board.
  • Studio 30” (disco + funky typography)
  • “Death to 20s” (mourn the loss of your 20s with a funeral to remember. Check out our farewell to 20s inspo board. )
  • Champagne birthday” (cream + gold + minimal florals)

Where to source decor + statement installs

  • Custom balloon installs/garlands (local Chicago option): Cute and Classy Balloons
  • Stationery + elevated paper goods (invites, place cards, signage ideas): Paper Source (Chicago-based retailer with store locator) (Paper Source)

Pro tip: spend on one big “wow” moment (balloon moment, floral cloud, candle wall, photo backdrop) and keep everything else simple.

Food on a budget (that still feels 30th-birthday-worthy)

Le Loft’s open vendor policy is the budget cheat code: you can bring in what you want — including outside catering — and you can also bring homemade apps/desserts if you want to keep costs down. (Le Loft)

Budget-friendly food formats that work great here

  • Drop-off catering + disposable chafers (best cost-to-effort ratio)
  • Taco bar / pasta bar / slider bar
  • Grazing tables + one “hot” item
  • Dessert-only moment + late-night snacks

How to find a DJ (or keep it playlist-powered)

If dancing is part of your 30th plan, a DJ is usually worth it — not just for music, but for pacing the night (toasts, transitions, “okay, everyone, we’re doing the thing!”).

Reliable places to source DJs

  • We have a preferred vendor list with DJs we work with regularly, but we can also find great options via the sources below.
  • The Bash (Chicago DJ marketplace): browse + request quotes (The Bash)
  • GigSalad (Chicago DJ listings): compare options + reviews (GigSalad)
  • Thumbtack (Chicago DJs): good for quick bids if you’re price-shopping (Thumbtack)

DJ tip: ask one question that immediately separates pros from amateurs:
“How do you handle transitions between dinner/toasts and the dance floor, and can you MC lightly?”

Ideas that make a 30th feel truly personal

Here are “unique but not cringey” upgrades that work perfectly in a loft space:

a guests celebrates their birthday at Le Loft
  • A 30-minute “main character” moment: outfit change + spotlight + signature song
  • Photo montage on the projector (with a toast right after) (Le Loft)
  • A themed bar menu named after inside jokes
  • A “30 things we love about you” wall guests can add to all night
  • A late-night mini experience: tarot reader, sketch artist, mini photo set, or temporary tattoo station

FAQs

Can I bring my own food and alcohol?
Yes. We allow outside catering and BYOB. You’ll need a licensed bartender if you’re serving alcohol, which your caterer can often provide. Homemade appetizers and desserts are welcome, just check with your caterer about any restrictions on their end.

How many guests can Le Loft hold for a birthday party?
The west side holds up to 99 guests (standing), and the east side seats up to 70 for a plated dinner. Seated capacity depends on your table layout, so reach out, and we’ll walk through options based on your guest count.

Is there parking nearby?
Yes. Free street parking is available on surrounding blocks, and there are non-permitted spaces nearby. For larger parties, we recommend encouraging guests to use rideshare to avoid parking delays.

What time does my event need to end?
Events must wrap by 12 AM on Fridays and Saturdays unless you’ve arranged an extension with our team in advance. Your rental includes access from 12 PM to 11 PM on your event day, plus next-day pickup from 8 AM to 10 AM.
